As a new grad or intern navigating your early career experiences, ambiguity can be challenging. Here are some tips for effectively managing ambiguity in the workplace:
If you are unsure how to tackle unknown problems, before reaching out to your manager, take the initiative to gather information and explore possible solutions on your own instead of waiting for clear instructions. This has always been something that intern managers highlight as a positive trait during intern evaluations. So, be proactive in seeking resources, researching, and brainstorming solutions.
Never hesitate to ask your manager or peers for clarification when faced with ambiguity. Whenever you are unsure about something, it's okay to ask for more information or guidance. This can help you gain a better understanding of the situation and set clear expectations for your work.
Teamwork makes the dream work! If you feel like you’re stuck or need a bit more help, don’t be afraid to work with others to find a solution. That can be you coming up with 3 different solutions and seeking feedback from your peers on what they recommend or having them review your work before you turn it in. If someone helps you in any way, always thank them for their time and make sure that their work is also acknowledged.
It is important to communicate effectively when faced with ambiguity. Keep your manager and peers updated on your progress, challenges, and any uncertainties you may be experiencing. Be honest about your thought process and seek feedback from your peers. In this way, you can align expectations and make sure everyone understands the project.
Remember that no human being knows everything and that getting a task that is ambiguous, is normal in the workplace. So, be open to these challenges and take it as a learning opportunity. Things might not go the way you want them to at first but that is part of the learning process, so you can then use that learning experience for future tasks that arise.
