How To Manage Your Time As An Intern

Managing your time effectively is critical for meeting deadlines and maximizing productivity. Here are some tips on how to manage your time effectively as an intern:

  1. Know your expectations! This will allow you to have a clear understanding of what you need to accomplish and by when. You can then set goals for yourself on a daily or weekly basis.
  2. Create a schedule that works for you! You will often be asked to meet with peers so, you can structure your schedule to be meeting-heavy in the morning or afternoon and then schedule working time around that. Your calendar should reflect the blocked time that you are dedicating to working on your project so that when someone asks to meet, you can let them know to just book on your calendar since that reflects when you’re available.
  3. Make sure you are not just working and having meetings all day. You should be adding time to take breaks, network, and attend company events. Trust me, you will not get behind —- enjoy all of the amazing opportunities your internship has to offer!
  4. When estimating time for a task, be realistic. Time requirements should not be underestimated or overestimated; organizing your time effectively will prevent unnecessary stress and delays. More mistakes can be made if things are rushed.
  5. Do not take too much on at the same time. If someone offers you a project and you already have a lot on your plate, it’s okay to push back and say something like “I would love to help but right now, I don’t have the bandwidth but I should have more flexibility in the next week or so”. Remember that your main focus should be your intern project(s), sometimes there will be opportunities to get looped into other work but it’s best if you do not have the time, to focus on your primary project.
  6. Whenever you need help, don't be afraid to ask. Seek guidance from your manager or peers if you need help with a project. By doing this, you will be able to avoid misunderstandings or errors that may waste time. I’ve seen so many interns make the mistake of not reaching out to their manager or peers when stuck and they end up getting behind —- your peers and manager are there to support you and they do not expect you to know everything so please use them as a resource!
  7. Flexibility is key! You have to be aware that sometimes things do not go as planned and you might have to change things last minute so be prepared for schedule and or deadline changes. It’s okay to have to move things around, when this does happen, communication is essential, so make sure that you inform others affected by such changes in case you have to reschedule meetings (this happens very often).
