In order to get the most out of an internship, you need to be proactive! As a proactive intern, you can make a positive impression and set yourself up for success in the future. Here are a few reasons why being proactive is vital during your internship:
- An internship is an opportunity to grow and learn new skills but employers also love interns because of the unique perspective you can bring, so don’t be afraid to speak up and bring new ideas forward.
- Being proactive shows initiative and taking initiative is a common characteristic that intern managers look for when evaluating their interns. Questions such as “If they were ever stuck on problems, did they constantly wait for direction or did they ever try to tackle the issue themselves or use resources available to them before reaching to the intern manager?”.
- Interns who are proactive are more likely to identify opportunities for improvement and innovation within their work environments. So, you have the opportunity to really make an impact and contribute to the success of the company you work for by taking initiative to suggest solutions or make changes.
- Do not wait for opportunities to come to you, the amazing thing about internships is the fact that a lot of what you’re experiencing is new and there are so many people that want to help you out on that journey. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people outside of your team for coffee chats (virtual or in-person) or lunch. You never know where those conversations will lead, it may be a shadowing day, a new interest of yours, and or just a great connection to have!
